Healthcare Consultancy Vital Transformation Expands to United States with Opening of Washington D.C. Office
(May 29th, 2015 – Brussels, Washington D.C.): Healthcare consultancy Vital Transformation is expanding to the United States with the addition of a new partner to head its operations in Washington D.C. Joseph P. Hammang, Ph.D., will join the Vital Transformation team, overseeing the company’s work in the U.S. and supporting its growing presence in Europe.
Vital Transformation Managing Director Duane Schulthess and Marketing Manager Petra Naster will further the Vital Transformation expansion by welcoming Denny Van Liew as Non-Executive Director. Also joining the team is Alison Kilian, who will be acting as Project Manager.

With the addition of a D.C. office, Vital Transformation will further increase its work in the U.S. Until April of this year, Dr. Hammang was Senior Vice President, Life Sciences for Washington, D.C.-based ML Strategies. Prior to ML Strategies, he spent a decade with Pfizer Inc. as Senior Director, Worldwide Science Policy. He holds a Ph.D. in the area of Neuroscience from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Joseph P. Hammang, Ph.D., is a healthcare and life sciences industry consultant based in Washington, DC. Dr. Hammang provides strategic consulting services to leading biopharmaceutical firms, start-up biotechnology companies, industry trade organizations as well as non-profit foundations. Until April of this year, Dr. Hammang was Senior Vice President, Life Sciences for Washington, DC-based ML Strategies. Prior to ML Strategies, Joe spent a decade with Pfizer Inc as Senior Director, Worldwide Science Policy. Before joining Pfizer, Joe served as Vice President for Science, Technology and Business Development at the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation and as Head of Science and Technology at the Rhode Island Economic Policy Council. In that role, he served as Governor Lincoln Almond’s Advisor for Science and Technology. Joe previously held positions at the Bristol-Myers Squibb Company where he was involved in Alzheimer’s disease research and at CytoTherapeutics, Inc. in Providence, Rhode Island where he served as Director of Cell and Molecular Neuroscience and Director of the Ophthalmology Therapeutic program.
Joe holds a Ph.D. in the area of Neuroscience from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and is author of 65 scientific articles and invited book chapters and is inventor or co-inventor of over 35 U.S. patents. Joe and his wife, Susan, live in the District of Columbia and they have 2 adult daughters.
Denny Van Liew is a Managing Director and Head of Kinapse, Inc. (US) Cambridge, MA office. He also serves as a Board Member Emeritus of The Personalized Medicine Coalition, which promotes the advancement of personalized medicine by addressing regulatory, reimbursement, privacy, ethical, and educational issues critical to the field. He previously worked for Pfizer as Senior Director, Strategic Initiatives and PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, and the NHS, among others.
Alison Kilian is a strategic communications consultant based in Vienna, Austria. She began her career in journalism, writing for publications in Germany and North America, before transitioning to the communications field. Prior to joining Vital Transformation, she worked as the Communications Manager at EFPIA, the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations. She holds a MA of Comparative Literature from the Freie Uni Berlin.
